Vernacular: Splendid Spring Jewel

Account: Local in birch woodland throughout the British Isles. E. salopiella has a similar pattern and wing shape but is normally suffused with purple and bright blue (MBGBI Vol 1). Larva mines leaves of Birch, over-wintering as a pupa. Brown spots on the prothorax of the mature larva are diagnostic.
